In the passage before us, Jesus cursed a fig tree and overturned tables. He did not normally behave this way. Jesus did not customarily use miraculous power in destructive ways, but in ways that led to healing, feeding, deliverance, and resurrection. Jesus was about giving life. And when we imagine—really imagine—tables and chairs clanging to the ground while travel and trading are stopped, we are also concerned. Jesus often rebuked the way of the religionists of his day, but not like this.

It is amazing how religious leaders would not answer Jesus' questions. He'd asked, Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill? And they responded with silence (4). The section that we're entering into here in chapter 32 actually extends all the way through to chapter 34. We're not going to cover all three chapters in one sitting, though that would be an appropriate exercise because they are a unit. And this unit is meant to communicate a message about the rebellion of the people, the mediation of Moses in interceding for the people, and God's restorative process in the people's lives, bringing them right back into the covenant.

Here, we learn Adam knew Eve, which is the Bible's way of saying they knew one another in the act of sex. As an aside, this should be instructive concerning sex. To God, sex isn't the mere collision of bodies who are out for a good time. Instead, though it should be clear, because of the design of our sexual organs, that God designed sex to be intensely pleasurable, he always thought of it as a major expression of an intimate relationship.
